Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore and to analyse the preconditions for the social work with intimate partner violence among the LGBTQ population and to explore theoretical frameworks professionals use to explain such violence. The study is based on qualitative semi-structured interviews with five professionals working in different organizations connected to the LGBTQ community. The theoretical tools used in this study are Ilan H. Meyer’s model (2010) on minority stress, the gender system by Yvonne Hirdman (1988) and queer theories, including Judith Butler’s heterosexual matrix (2007). The results showed that these professionals mainly use critique of heteronormativity together with the theoretical framework on Gender Hierarchy and Minority stress to explain intimate partner violence (IPV) in LGBTQ people’s relationships and to explain the preconditions for working with this population. One conclusion is that there is an ambition to include LGBTQ people in the structural explanatory model for IPV, and at the same time an insecurity as how to do so. These professionals insist on using the gender system, even though they struggle with it. Another conclusion is therefore that additional structural explanations and theories as well as further investigation into this area is called for.
