RT-HIL Hardware Prototyping of Synchrophasor and Active Load-Based Power System Oscillation Damping Controllers

The Icelandic power system is characterized by twoareas that oscillate against each other during stressed systemoperation, and may lead to an islanding of system. Conventionalstabilizing methods are being used to their full capacity, thus newoptions are being explored to prevent system break-ups. There ispotential in exploiting large industrial loads to enhance systemstability. In this paper a hardware prototype of a synchrophasorbasedactive load controller for oscillation damping is presented.The performance of the controller is analysed using Real-TimeHardware-in-the-Loop (RT-HIL) approach.
