Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A large proportion of workers in elderly care have different cultural backgrounds and do not have Swedish as their first language and for those who have come to Sweden as adults, there are various opportunities to study to become an assistant nurse and at the same time learn the Swedish language. To work in elderly care without mastering the Swedish language can be a big challenge because care work itself is communicatively demanding. The purpose of the thesis was to study the subjective experience of communication with the elderly in elderly care of assistant nurses with Swedish as a second language. Four trained assistant nurses were interviewed about their subjective experience of communication with the elderly to understand how they established communication, what difficulties they experienced and what strategies they used to overcome their deficits in the languages. The analysis was done with Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) and four main themes where identified: communicative functions in care work, emotional communication with the elderly, psychological distress and self-image and communications strategies. The result was discussed in relation to previous research and implications, and recommendations for training to assistant nurses with Swedish as a second language were brought into the discussion.
