"Ibland räcker min svenska inte" : Reading in a second language: experiences of six students in upper secondary school in Sweden (English)
Abstract [en]

Abstract

The overall purpose of this qualitative interview study was to research the experiences and thoughts of six students who came to Sweden when they were 10-12 years old and therefore have Swedish as a second language, focusing on reading and studying in Swedish and the teaching and the support that they have gotten. The aim of the study was also to see if pupils with reading and writing difficulties had different experiences than the pupils without those difficulties. The informants had lived in Sweden for 6-8 years, three of them had reading and writing difficulties and three of them did not.

The outcome of the study shows that all of the informants experienced a difficult transition period when they left the ”preparation-class” and started regular education. The informants with reading and writing difficulties did also perceive the ”preparation-class” as hard whilst the other informants thought of the ”preparation-class” as easy or too easy. The study also shows that the informants, after 6-8 years in Sweden, do not feel that they master the Swedish language to an extent that they can read and study at the same level as their classmates who have Swedish as a first language. Results of the study shows that informants have been both overrepresented and underrepresented in special education and that informants who have participated in special education have positive experiences of this.
