Men´s experiences in connection with prostatectomy : A litterature study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Globally, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men and most often affects those who are over 70 years. The most common treatment is radical prostatectomy, which may cause erectile dysfunction and urinary incontinence. After the prostatectomy feelings of anxiety, depression and psychological pain may arise.

Aim: The aim of this literature study was to illustrate men’s experiences in connection with prostatectomy.

Method: 11 qualitative articles were used to answer the aim of the literature study. The articles have been reviewed, analyzed and compiled into a result.

Result: The result was presented in four categories and nine subcategories, which was ”The importance of information – to search information on their own, information by caregivers, lack of information”, ”The treatment – choose the right surgery, forced to wear catheter”, ”Changed body functions – to be urinary incontinent, to have erectile dysfunctions” and ”Support – relative relationships, caregivers”.

Conclusion: The literature study showed that every experience was unique, although most of the men had similar experiences of the prostatectomy. The different experiences of the men could in one way or another been seen as a suffering, which is different and unique of every individual.
