Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: For children one of the most common and dreaded fears associated with a hospital stay is having to get stung by a needle. The majority of children experience pain and severe anxiety during needle procedures and might result in a persistent fear of needles. It might render the procedure more difficult and lead to an avoidance of health care which ultimately might have major consequenses for the individual.

Aim: The aim of this literature study was to describe different interventions that can relieve pain and anxiety in children during needle procedures.

Method: A literature study of fifteen articles with quantitative approach. The result of the articles were reviewed, analysed and compiled inspired by a manifest content analysis. The search was conducted in CINAHL, PubMed and Medline.

Result: Three main categories and six subcategories were identified. The three main categories included: interventions that diverts attention, interventions that promotes security and local pain relief.

Conlusion: Relatively simple but effective nursing interventions can alleviate children’s suffering associated with needle procedures. An individualized care, a combination of nursing interventions and a responsiveness to the parent’s feelings and needs may reduce children’s suffering.
