Estonia meets Karlstad : A comparative study of “stigmatization” of people from Estonia in the cities Karlstad and Norrköping. (English)
Abstract [en]

This comparative study has focused on the stigmatized process of people from Estonia which may have occurred in Karlstad between the years 1946-1949. The study has got support from Björn Horgby studies, in the city Norrköping, and how the union group “Textilettan” demanded people of Estonia to be excluded from Sweden, however they should have been expelled from the union first. Moreover, investigate if this mind-set occurred in Karlstad as well.

This study’s goal is to compare the role of media in the stigmatized process of Estonians in Karlstad. No previous research has been found on Estonians in Sweden, during this time, and the study has taken aid from a study made in Norway.

The study also got two more questions to get a grip of how big the group of Estonians was in Karlstad during the period of 1946-1949. Furthermore how the distribution looked like between these people through a series of parameters like married, unmarried and a distribution in terms of age. The last question is concerning the job situation regarding Estonians. Did these people from Estonia get any job in the new city, what type of labor they could get a chance to execute, also how the distribution looked like between males and females regarding occupation.

The results of this study has shown differences between Karlstad and Norrköping in the issue of “stigmatized process” of people from Estonia but also similarities with the Norwegian studies of refugees and this study in the role of media
