E Nursing interventions for patients with COPD in primary care – a systematic review of the literature (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a complex and one of the most common lung disease. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. The disease requires different types of actions and efforts from different professions in primary care. Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the evidence-based nursing interventions a district nurse can perform to improve the quality of life in patients with COPD in primary care. Method: The study was conducted as a systematic literature study, based on the Swedish Council for medical evaluation guidelines. Eleven quantitative and three qualitative studies were included in the results. Results: The result shows four main categories of nursing interventions such as education, physical activity, smoking cessation and individual treatment plans that improve the quality of life in patients with COPD. In the quantitative studies it was seen that the quality of life decreases six months after completion of the intervention. Conclusion: Several evidence-based nursing interventions are important for quality of life in patients with COPD. It is important to participate in a pulmonary rehabilitation program. These nursing interventions can be implemented at the district nurse in primary care. If patients with COPD can learn to manage their illness in a good way, this may ultimately reduce the number of visits and hospitalizations.
