A Conceptual Analysis of the Concept Symptom Burden : in Context to Patients with Cancer (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Symptom Burden is a well-used concept in medicine and nursing. The concept often emerge in contexts with patients who have chronic or incurable disease, and today there are high requirements to provide better long-term and developmental care for these patients. The purpose of the conceptual analysis is to analyze the concept of symptom burden, identify critical attributes of the concept and the conditions and consequences. The method is a conceptual analysis carried out according to Walker and Avant (2014) eight-stage analysis model. Synonyms, etymological and semantic description of the concept have been applied in the dictionaries. The result is mainly made up out of scientific articles. Cinahl, PubMed and PsycINFO databases were used for the literature search. The results show that the symptom burden is a subjective experience of the disease- or treatment related symptoms affecting the patient's daily life, increased symptom intensity, physical and emotional suffering that leads to decreased survival, decreased social functioning, reduced quality of life and treatment interruptions. The authors also identified that patient’s decreased ability to manage the symptoms and the nurse’s poor symptom management, inadequate information and lack of communication are causes of increased symptom burden, which speeds up the process leading to symptom burdens severe consequences.
