The purpose of this report was to study nutrients in surface water upstream and downstream a fur farm area in Finland. To be able to do this report, data collected by Miljövårdsbyrån in Jakobstad during 2012-2013 have been analyzed. The analyzed parameters include total phosphorus (Tot-P), total nitrogen (Tot-N), color and iron. In addition to the nutrient analysis interviews with the representative of the fur farmers and the person in charge of environmental aspects on the fur farm area have been conducted to get a better view of what’s happening in the area and what have been done to directly reduce the amount of nutrients leaking to the recipient. The analysis of data shows that the amount of nutrients gets significantly higher downstream the fur farm area until Fäbodabäcken merges with Fäboviken in the Baltic Sea, where the nutrients get diluted with an abundance of sea water. The amount of nutrients was much higher during 2012-2013 than the previous 30 years due to expansion of the area. Nutrients in Fäbodabäcken have the highest values during May to November due to a higher amount of animals in the area during that period of time. This report concludes that a significantly higher value for both Tot-P and Tot-N exists downstream the area. The fur farm area is the main source of nutrients that leaks to the recipient, but there are also some agricultural fields that can affect the nutrient status in the recipient.
