Abstract [en]

Are orientalist themes still present in textbooks, and if they are, how can we see them? This is the question I asked myself while writing this essay. To find an answer to the questions, I have analyzed several textbooks that are used in Swedish high schools. During said analysis I have held to a thesis, that traces of orientalism are present within textbooks used in religious studies. The essay focuses on the sections dealing with Buddhism in these textbooks. As tools for this analysis I have established three themes that are present in orientalist studies. These themes are mysticism, Buddhism as the other and idealizing of Buddhism. The analysis performed in this essay showed that there indeed are several signs of orientalist themes within Swedish textbooks, some showed more signs of these themes than others. After this I continue the essay with discussing in what way the presence of these themes collide with the purpose and values of both religious studies and high school as described in the national curriculum. Values such as to strive against discrimination and to develop students’ knowledge and abilities to analyze religion through different perspectives. This discussion shows that these themes do indeed collide with the above mentioned values and purposes.
