Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This thesis explores how six teenage girls use mobile phones in their everyday peer group interaction. How do the girls relate to mobile phones in their peer culture? What does it mean to them? The girl's perspective is central in this thesis and the method is qualitative interviews. The theoretical framework is drawing from the American sociologist William A. Corsaro. The findings show that availability and updating through mobile phones were important elements in their local peer cultures. There is a fear and worry of missing things that takes place in the social media. It´s also important to respond quickly to avoid conflicts between friends. Despite fear and worry that comes with mobile phones, the main reason to be online and active in the social media is to maintain friendship.
