Dyslexia among multilingual students and adults : An interview-based study of how teachers and dyslexia investigators act around and investigate dyslexia in multilingual high school students and adult education learners (English)
Abstract [en]

There is a lot of different survey material used when investigating dyslexia with students whose native language is Swedish. Sadly there are few or no methods for investigating dyslexic multilingual high school students, with Swedish as their second language. This thesis investigates the methods used by teachers and investigators of dyslexia when working with multilingual students. The theoretical framework used in this thesis consists of theories related to dyslexia, second language learning and orthography. Information about the subject and methods used by teachers was gathered through semi structured interviews. Results show that teachers and investigators find it hard to separate insufficient fluency from dyslexia, due to survey material that is not constructed for second language learners. Teachers and investigators also recommend that students should have been living in Sweden for a minimum of 4 years before an investigation is carried out. Results also show that the signs of dyslexia should be more distinct in investigations concerning multilingual students, for teachers and investigators to be able to determine if students have dyslexia or not.
