We and the others : - How do teachers handle content in literature which can be perceived as problematic in terms of ethnicity? (English)
Abstract [en]

When pupils in school are to meet literature from different parts of the world and from different periods, there can be material included in the teaching which can be found problematic, for example, values that we cannot agree with today. The aim of this study was to find out how teachers handle material with problematic features as regards selection, values, and teaching method. Two teachers and one school librarian were interviewed for the study. All three work in the lower level of compulsory school and use literature for teaching purposes. In view of today’s multicultural society, the study applies an ethnicity perspective.

All the informants were in agreement that if there was some problematic content in the literature they read to the class, it was important to discuss this with the pupils. Despite that, the pupils of one of the teachers did not have any time to reflect on the books they read themselves. The school librarian was the one with most reflections on the selection of books, while the two teachers relied heavily on their school librarian to find suitable literature. Since the teachers did not have time to read through the literature before they read it with the class, they had no time to prepare any questions either. The discussions therefore proceeded from spontaneous reactions to the text that was read. This is problematized in the study on the basis of Judith A. Langer’s theory of literary envisionment. The informants’ attitudes are also discussed from a postcolonial perspective with the focus on how we create “us” and “them”.
