Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study is about how women experience their health and wellbeing after they have left a relation where they have been subject to domestic violence. Furthermore one of the women in this study is still in the relationship with her husband after being subject to domestic violence. The exposure to violence can be of physical kind as well as psychological, economic and also sexual. All women that have been subject to any of these types of violence carry this with them for the rest of their lives, something that affects their health and wellbeing as well as their feelings in other relationships. The purpose of this study is to study the experiences that these women have had, being subject to violence within a couples relationships, and how   they experience the effect on their health and wellbeing in retrospect. Within this study there is a strong focus on the women’s own perspective and experiences, and for this the choice of research efforts follow the hermeneutics. In depth interviews were used for collecting the data, where the women were given a chance to speak freely of their experiences. The theories used interpretation the results of this study were, power, social connections and emotions. The result shows that women who have been subject to violence in couple relationships experience that their health and wellbeing has been affected by this, however there are also some positive experiences in from of gained knowledge which these women find useful in their lives. Some of these women have also been subject to more than one type of violence. Being subjected to violence by a partner is very “heart-rending and frightening” and builds a sense of inner defense which often builds on the views that “this does not happen only to me” and “it just it so”. First after the women have gotten out of the relationships have they realized how serious the violence has been and what they have been through. Some of their views do however slightly differ on this, as well as their experiences of health, self-esteem and wellbeing. This study contributes to the explanation of how wellbeing changes for women that have lived in couples relationships where they have been subject to violence, as well as how their experiences can have both positive and negative effects on their wellbeing.
