Abstract [en]

Snow stratigraphy in Antarctica is strongly influenced by wind. Yearly accumulation is always masked by intermediate erosion and deposition events. This results in a complex stratigraphy. Kohnen Station has a higher accumulation than the very low accumulation areas of East Antarctica and therefore is suited to investigate the complex stratigraphy. Here we use GPR at a frequency of 1.6 GHz to resolve the stratigraphy. We compared the GPR measurements with detailed snow profiles measured using density profiles. Three different experimental set ups were used to give a first overview of this method. In additional near-infrared and translucent images detailed depositional features as great variability in layer thickness and cross-bedding are visible. ,ur results show very complex patterns which are not easily correlated to other features and not necessarily to yearly accumulation.
