Range of level, pro or con? : A qualitative interview study regarding the conductor’s work with a heterogeneous wind band (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The present study examines how band leaders of amateur orchestras and music schools work with and reflect about the level of the musicians in the orchestra, how the range of level affects the progression and how the band leaders handle having a range of level in the orchestra. The method used in the study is qualitative interviews and the result has been compared with previous research and theories about leadership. There is little previous research about amateur orchestras as the large part of the research is based on professional orchestras where a similar range of level does not exist.

The result of the study shows that the conductors, based on a social aspect, prefer a heterogeneous level in the orchestra and use specific rehearsal methods to reach musical progression and to handle the range of level of the musicians. The reflection of the work with the orchestra mainly circles around logistics and only to a lesser degree about the methodical work.
