Games on schedule : Student perspectives on how gamification and game mechanics can affect teaching and learning in primary schools (English)
Abstract [en]

This study examines the impact of teaching method gamification and how game mechanisms affect motivation from a student perspective in the subject of Swedish. The study was conducted on 34 students in elementary school, and data from qualitative surveys and interviews have been analyzed to provide answers to questions about student attitude to this method. The results show that the integration of gamification in classroom teaching has several positive effects. It raises motivation and commitment of pupils concerning what has to be learned. At the same time, the pupils’ everyday life is connected to the world of school and education in a concrete way. Both the gamification method and the use of game mechanics in Swedish education can raise efforts and produce positive behaviors in students, because the purposes of what to be learned are hereby visualized and clarified. In this way the gamification method can be a powerful tool that creates success in teaching because it gives students a positive experience in a subject-specific content.
