Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to describe some students' experiences of first language education as a subject in compulsory education for pupils/children with intellectual disabilities. I have conducted a qualitative study in which data were collected through semi structured research interviews.

The study is based on video recording and voice recorded interviews of four pupils. The analysis is done with a phenomenological approach to the analytic process. The interviews have been processed in five steps in order to establish the nature of the phenomena students' experience of first language education.

The result shows that the students are satisfied with the first language education, as a subject, that they participate in. The result also indicates that the students´ use their abilities that they have acquired in mother tongue education mostly in their social context. That indicates that the curriculum's intentions are not implemented.  The curricula for the compulsory education, Lgr 11, states that having access to one’s native language also facilitates language development and learning in other areas (Skolverket, 2011b). I regard this non-use of first language education in the school context as a failure to utilize that resource. Therefore, in my opinion, a clearer and more present first language education in the school context can promote students´ abilities in other school subjects.
