Communication and play in education for children with severe learning disabilities. : Play as an educational method for children with autism from the teacher’s perspective. (English)
Abstract [en]

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ views on play as a method for developing pupil’s communication and interaction in schools for children with severe learning disabilities. I am interested in pupils with autism spectrum disorder and their opportunities for social interaction with peers in playful activities. I focus on the subject communication and the parts about speech, conversation and interaction. My study is based on a qualitative study. I have interviewed five pedagogues who work in schools for children with severe learning disabilities and empirical data is analyzed using prior research. The theoretical foundation used is Vygotskij’s theory of socio-cultural learning. The results of the study show that educators believe play is a good teaching method to use in schools for children with severe learning disabilities. This conclusion also includes children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. The teachers describe difficulties students may have in interaction situations and also describe aspects that facilitate interaction of students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders. Teachers also feel that it is hard for pupils to find friends to interact with within schools for children with severe learning disabilities.
