Depopulation and Small Municipalities : A study about depopulation and strategies (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of the thesis is to explain and describe the difficult situation for small and depopulated municipalities in Sweden. The thesis will examine which strategies these municipalities uses to ensure mandatory obligations in the public sector. It will also reveal how these actors operate to reverse the depopulation. How do the municipalities handle the decreasing resources which emerge out of the urbanisation? The thesis will use research and three diffrent fundational theories, which are the sociological, the classical institutionalism and the rational perspective. By using resarch and theories, we aim to explain similarities and diffrences between the chosen subjects.

The examination of these complexities is generated by a comparative case-study. By using offical documents interviews, we have found that intermunicipal cooperation is the most freqeuntly used strategy and it is mostly because of the ability of increased competence.
