Abstract [sv]

---- When working with typefaces, whether you are creating- or simply choosing one, there are implications followed by the creation and/or choice. Legibility and readabilty lie at the heart of typeface design – however the principles surrounding them are flexible and subject to change, depending on the intended context for the typeface. A grasp of the history of use of certain typefaces as well as knowledge of the possible associations they might create are also of great importance when working with typefaces. Research regarding typeface readability has shown a certain typeface-weight – in a given typeface, to be optimal for reading at a point size of 10. Research regarding emotional response to typefaces has shown that specific typeface features can be related to specific emotion responses. Research regarding typefaces percieved personality shows that certain anatomical features of typefaces can be associated with certain personality traits. In light of previous research, this study aims to investigate which anatomical features of typefaces can potentially contribute to a specific personality. The anatomical features of typefaces with varying design-characteristics are examined in detail and discussed furthermore – to make possible connections between certain anatomical features within typefaces and their percieved personality traits. A typeface is then produced; which holds a base form and an alternate form whose anatomical features may potentially make the typeface able to exhibit multiple personality traits.

Abstract [en]

Every day we are in some way in contact with typefaces. Perhaps without thinking about the process surrounding the creation of a typeface, or why a specific typeface is used in a given context. Typefaces can be - and are often - assigned different personality traits depending on their design. They can for example be percieved as kind, formal or classical. But what in the actual design is it that makes a typeface convey a particular personality trait? In light of previous research regarding typeface legibility/readability, emotional response to typeface forms and typeface personality, this study aims to investigate which anatomical features of typefaces can potentially contribute to a specific personality.
