Abstract [sv]

Hälsa och motion har alltmer blivit ett central begrepp i dagens samhälle. I mediala debatter matas människor ständigt om hur man ska träna rätt, och vad man ska äta för att förbättra sin hälsa. En avsevärd del av befolkningen i samhället försöker leva upp till medias representation av kroppen, vilket fortsättningsvis leder till en norm i samhället som alla ska leva efter. Forskning har visat att överviktiga individer upplever utanförskap i samhället på grund av att de inte uppfyller medias kriterier för kroppens utseende. Mot bakgrund av detta var syftet med föreliggande studie, att undersöka om, överviktiga väljer att gå ner i vikt på grund av media.

Som metod valdes en kvalitativ design med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Sex deltagare ingick i studien och alla var mellan 19 och 30 år. Analysen som tillämpades för den här studien var en kombination av teoristyrd- empiristyrd tematiskt analys. I analysen framträdde två huvudteman med vardera subtema: (1) Yttre motivation; media och sociala attityder (2) Inre motivation; Self-efficacy, intresse och hälsa/utseende. Resultatet visade att en kombination med media och sociala attityder var en bidragande faktor till viktnedgång. Den yttre motivationen var alltså en avgörande faktor för deltagarna.

Abstract [en]

Health and fitness has increasingly become a key concept in today's society. Media debates feed people constantly about how to train properly, and what to eat to improve their health. A considerable part of the population in the community trying to live up to the media's representation of the body, which still leads to a norm in society that everyone, should live by. Research has shown that overweight individuals experiencing exclusion in society because they do not live up to media criteria for the body's appearance. With this background, the purpose of the present study, to investigate whether, overweight chooses to lose weight because of the media.

A qualitative design with semi-structured interviews where chosen for this study. Six participants were included in the study, and all were between 20 and 30 years. The analysis applied for this study was a combination of theory controlled- empiricism guided thematic analysis. The analysis appeared two main themes, each with subtema: (1) External motivation; media and social attitudes. (2) Internal motivation; Self-efficacy, interest and health / appearance. The result showed that a combination of the media and social attitudes was a contributing factor to the loss of weight. The external motivation was therefore a crucial factor for the participants.
