Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of the study is to investigate ways in which vocal coaches communicate with students: which communicative tools do vocal coaches use and how are these combined in various patterns of behaviour. The study is limited to analysing the part of the singing lesson dealing specifically with exercises. The study does not analyse the communication efficiency. Instead, the focus is on mapping the communication in the aforementioned part of the lesson. The analysis shows three types of actions: framing, inspiration and feedback. Within these actions, four different patterns of behaviour commonly occur: mirroring, exaggeration, marking and offering. Through these patterns of behaviour, the vocal coach uses various communication tools. These are combined in various ways depending on the context, the communicators and the content of the communication. The individual singing lesson is a learning environment where the vocal coach is important to the knowledge offered to the student. Knowledge is mediated through the use of different types of communication tools such as words, gestures and facial expressions.
