Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to, through qualitative methods, examine the environments impact on an ADHD-diagnosed individual perception of their quality of life and also to examine the factors that are prominent for the diagnosed individuals well-being.

The presented material has been generated on basis of eleven qualitative interviews with individuals who are either diagnosed with ADHD, living in close relationship with an ADHD-diagnosed individual or working with ADHD. The presented material is then analyzed based on relevant social psychology theories of Becker (2006), Goffman (2006) and May (2013).

The result shows that the environment has a significant impact on how the ADHD-diagnosed individuals perceive their quality of life. The complications that the ADHD diagnosis contributes with makes it more difficult for the individual to live up to the requirements and standards that the environment expects them to. This leads to that the diagnosed individual can be defined as deviant and in danger of being socially excluded from the group.

The individual is likely to identify with the traits the surrounding expects it to live up to and the role expected of it which leads to the individual playing a role they do not feel comfortable with in the pursuit of confirmation and a sense of belonging.
