“I notice that you saw” : A study of teachers and counsellors experiences and knowledge about non suicidal self-injury in adolescents. (English)
The aim of this study was trough qualitative interviews with teachers and counsellors in Swedish schools, to study their experiences and perceptions of non suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents. During the study three teachers and three counsellors who worked in four different schools were conducted. The theoretical approach that was used is Michael Polanyis theory tacit knowledge. The outcome of the study was that schools did not seem to talk about NSSI as a problem and the teachers knowledge about it had come from own experiences meeting adolescents whit NSSI. The interviewed teachers and counsellors felt it hard to define NSSI, they mainly referred it to someone who cut themselves. Although they described it to be so much more. The teachers felt it important to pay attention to NSSI and like the counsellors they did not feel that they had the possibility to work preventing towards NSSI as they might could. The main reason for this was the teachers lack of knowledge and the counsellors high work load. The analyse was based on three different categories: NSSI, prevention and is it teachers responsibility?
