Alone in the middle : A qualitative study on the experience of stress among middle managers in the public sector (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Work related stress has become a prevailing topic due to its effect on society. Theories have shown that a large of the stress in daily life is related to the individual’s occupation. The workers in the position of middle managers in public organizations play a crucial role in handling demands between employees and executives. The purpose of this paper is to inquire into factors that play into the causes of experiencing stress among middle managers in the public sector. We have chosen to use the theories of Karasek’s demand-control model, the social support in work, availability and stress. We conducted nine qualitative interviews with middle managers from Landstinget in Värmland. The results showed that the respondents experienced stress in their occupation, but they could manage it. The reason for this was that the respondents had both high demands and a high degree of control in their work. The social support that the respondents experienced had a positive effect in their stress experience. The demand for availability that the occupation put on the respondents was perceived as a natural part of their work and therefore had a limited effect on their stress experience. The papers conclusion is that the respondents in the study could manage and handle their stress experience in number of different ways through the factors that we sought out to inquire. However the respondent’s attitude towards their workplace could be perceived as embellishing the true reality of their work situation
