Finding an Optimum Climb Speed using OLS Regression

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this project was to find an optimum climb speed for a regional turbo prop airplane. Ordinary least squares regression was used to find a model for the climb performance of a Fokker 50 airplane. Data from 103 flights was collected manually with the assistance of the pilots of a Swedish regional airline and used to confirm the model. The optimum air speed was found to depend on wind component and take off mass, where a tailwind suggests lower climb speed and a lower take off mass suggest a higher climb speed. Findings from this project could be used to make better decisions on what climb speed to use in order to save fuel, with economical and environmental benefits.

Syftet med arbetet var att finna den bästa stigfarten för ett regionalt trafikflygplan. Minsta kvadrat-metoden användes till att bestämma en modell för stigprestandan hos flygplan av typ Fokker 50. Data från 103 flygningar samlades in med hjälp av piloterna på ett mindre svenskt flygbolag. Den bästa stigfarten fanns beroende av vindkomponenten och startvikten, där medvind ger lägre stigfart och lägre startvikt ger högre stigfart. Slutsatserna från det här projektet kan användas för att ta bättre beslut angående vilken stigfart som bör användas och därigenom spara flygbränsle, med miljömässiga och ekonomiska resultat.
