Abstract [en]

Problem: Lack of caring science about how patients can experience dignity can lead to nurses and relatives presuming patients experience dignity in an other way than they actually do. This might lead to patients' feeling that their needs are not being catered for and that their dignity is threatened. Aim: To describe what influence older people's experience of dignity at end of life care. Method: A general literature survey has been applied. 15 articles has been analyzed using Friberg´s (2012) description of analysing both qualitative and quantitative studies. Result: Social contact feels important in final stages of life and involves contact with relatives and healthcare professionals. Also the feeling of being in control is considered important when patients lose control of their own lives due to terminal diseases. Furthermore, patients feel that the attitude of the health providers is crucial. To be cared for with respect and to be seen, heard and believed in contributes to an increased sense of dignity. Conclusion: All patients should receive care with respect and with their dignity in focus. This requires nurses to have a knowledge about how dignity can be experienced in end of life care.
