Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Psychological characteristics are relevant to athletes performance and development, which has received more attention in sports. The importance of including psychological characteristics in athletes development is emphasized. The purpose of this study was to descriptively examine motivation, emotion regulation, self-regulated learning, fear of failure and Psychological characteristics of developing excellence of swimmers and if the performance variance could be explained by any of these psychological characteristics. The study consisted of 87 swimmers between 12-27 years who participated in a number of training camps. Performance was based on individual FINA points (M=688, SD=73). Significant differences in the psychological characteristics were found for the subcategories of gender, age and effort. However no significant differences was found for FINA points. Gender and age could best explain the variance in performance. Motivation further contributed to the explanation, in addition, none of the remaining psychological characteristics could explain the variance in performance. The study highlights the difficulties in using performance measures and that psychological characteristics should be included in development, which could be beneficial for swimmers.
