School counsellors' work situation : What is school counsellors' experience of demands, control, support and stress in their work situation? (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to find out how school counsellors in Swedish primary school perceive their work situation. To find out this, we have used a qualitative method where we interviewed four school counsellors working in primary schools in Middle Sweden. During the interviews we focused on the experience of demands, control and support on the basis of the demand-control-support model as theoretical starting point. This model is considered to be able to explain what combinations of demands, control and support that contributes to a stressful work situation and which counteracts a stressful work situation. The results of this study show that school counselors in Swedish primary school experience high demands in the form of a high workload which is what contributes to stress. Combined to this they experience much control over and in work, and a lot of support from managers and colleagues. This enables them to have a voice in their work situation and thereby reduce the experience of stress at work.
