Abstract [en]

In the last decades the continuous work for more sustainable manufacturing has become a large part of the manufacturing companies’ operations. It is also well known that the factory planning shapes the manufacturing process to a great extent. Consequently it is logical to assume that the manufacturing companies’ factory planning process plays a major role in the work for increased sustainability. During the years of 2008 and 2009 Camfil Svenska AB started a layout project, called the Layout project, for their factory in Trosa. In this paper a case study has been done at the factory in Trosa, with the aim to identify the factory planning processes and activities that Camfil Svenska AB used in the Layout project. Furthermore a literature study was made where a theoretical framework for factory planning projects was studied. The Layout project was then linked with the project framework for factory planning to compare theory with practice. The linked activities in the framework for factory planning were then connected to the conventional model for sustainability, containing the three pillars economy, social and environment. The objective was to determine which activities used by Camfil Svenska AB in the Layout project that contributes to increased sustainability within the company’s operations. Furthermore a mapping process was made to see how these activities are allocated over the three pillars in the sustainability model. The paper also intends to conduct a discussion on how Camfil Svenska AB could improve their factory planning processes in terms of sustainability. Finally an attempt to generalize the results was made in order to make the results and conclusions interesting for other companies as well.
