Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay aims to create an understanding of how Christmas parties functions as a rite for socialisation in organizational cultures and also how it is perceived from a co-worker’s perspective. Three questions are formed in order to make it possible to investigate this purpose further; ”How do the co-workers experience the communication about the Christmas party in the organisation?” ”What does the co-workers expect from the Christmas party in their organisation?” and ”What purpose does the Christmas party serve within the organisation?”. A presentation of previous research is given, focusing mainly on rites within organisations and the socialisation that follows. Using the knowledge from earlier research within this area of science, two focus groups with four respondents in each are asked to discuss their experiences from Christmas parties. The collected empirical material is analysed using scientific theories on situated learning, organisational culture, rites and rituals. The results of the study shows that Christmas parties functions as a rite and that co-workers are socialised in to an organisational culture with the help from three different factors; How co-workers communicate about the party with each other within the organisation, that co-worker’s view on the Christmas party is a matter of course and that the people within the organisation consider the Christmas party an opportunity to create a spirit of community. Furthermore, results of the study also revealed that socialisation through the rite of a Christmas party create distance between groups, insecurity and alienation because of it. It was also comprehended as somewhat of a formality. The respondents of the study perceived the Christmas party as a positive event to look forward to, however it could also lead to negativity and feelings of indifference.
