The ocean of loneliness : Experiences of loneliness among the elderly (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The elderly population is increasing both internationally and nationally. Loneliness has been reported to be more common in the older generation and could become a growing health problem. The nurse should have the ability to support older people so that they can form a meaningful existence, both individually and in interaction with other people. The aim of the study was to highlight the experience of loneliness in elderly people 65 years and over. The study was conducted as a literature review of 12 scientific articles. The results culminated in five categories: lack of togetherness, to be left behind, to experience limitations, to experience the great solitude and to experience the changeable solitude. The elderly experienced loneliness as being excluded and abandoned. The experience of loneliness could be huge and frightening but also result in a feeling of freedom. Loneliness could be perceived as changeable and was not always a constant feeling. Further research in elderly people's experiences of loneliness is important to increase knowledge of loneliness which can improve the care of the elderly in clinical practice.
