"Inte direkt jättetaggad på matte": En studie om hur elever i särskilda utbildningsbehov i matematik upplever matematikundervisningen

Abstract [sv]

Arbetes utgångspunkt har varit att få mer kunskap om vad som gynnar respektive missgynnar elevers lärande i matematik. Syftet har varit att i ett samtal ta del av SUM-elevers, elever i särskilda utbildningsbehov i matematik, tankar om deras matematikundervisning. För att samla in empirisk data har sex intervjuer med elever från årskurs nio genomförts, men även en kortare klassrumsobservation har gjorts före intervjuerna. Teorin bygger på socialkonstruktivism, ett sociokulturellt perspektiv och matematisk forskning.

Resultatet pekar bland annat på att eleverna behöver mer tid till att repetera och fördjupa kunskaperna, att undervisningen bör varieras, att läraren är mycket viktig samt kamratstödets vikt för elevernas lärande. Det framkommer också att självkänslan stärks av att eleverna har förkunskaper om det kunskapsområde som klassen ska arbeta med och hur lärarens positiva förväntningar på elevens matematikinlärning underlättar. Inlärningen missgynnas till exempel av att eleverna mestadels har negativa tankar om matematikämnet, att undervisningstiden inte används effektivt av eleverna och att undervisningen går för fort fram.

 

Abstract [en]

The starting point has been to acquire more knowledge about what would be an advantage, as well as a disadvantage, in the promotion of student’s learning in the subject of mathematics. The purpose has been to investigate, define and catalogue SEN students in the subject of mathematics (in Swedish “SUM-elever”), Special Educational Needs, by using an interview method. In order to collect empirical data, six interviews were conducted with students from the ninth grade. In addition to this a concise classroom observation was carried out before the interviews were undertaken. The theory is based on; social constructivism, a socio-cultural perspective and mathematical scientific research.

The results point towards, amongst other things, that the students need more time for repetition and the strengthening of their knowledge in the subject; that the teaching should be varied, that the teacher is very important as well as the importance and need of peer support was clearly underlined. It was also evident that self-confidence was strengthened by the students having previous knowledge in the subject area that the class should work with and it was also evident that the teacher’s positive expectations of the student´s mathematical learning facilitate an improvement of the result. The disadvantages shown, in the promotion of student’s learning in the subject of mathematics, were that the students generally had a negative attitude to the subject of mathematics; that the lesson times were not used effectively by the students and that the tempo of teaching was by far too fast.
