Culture for elderly at Sannerudshemmet : A case study of a retirement home’s work with cultural health (English)
Abstract [en]

The Swedish government published their current proposition concerning cultural politics,

Tid för kultur in 2009. Due to this proposition, culture is considered a basic human right we all deserve to be provided with. It contained goals and guidelines for how to enable culture to all citizens, to integrate and enrich the state, the county councils’ and municipalities’ work with diversity and multi culture in their culture-based institutes. However, there seems to be a lack of strategies in the issue of how to provide our nondependent elderly, suffering age related handicaps and diseases, with this proclaimed necessity.

In recent years, there has been a lot of research proving the link between human wellbeing and a stimulating environment. This stimulating environment may include experiences of cultural activities (theatre, concerts, painting etc), either as a participant or as an audience, but also activities with cultural overtones (gardening, reading aloud) may serve its purpose. Therefore this method is considered to fill an important role in complementing the traditional medicine and is referred to as "art and health". The Swedish government’s counsel of cultural affairs, Kulturrådet, has granted financial contributions to exemplary cultural projects for elderly on several occasions since 2011.

My case study examines how a retirement home in Sweden, Sannerudshemmet, is working with cultural activities in their operating plan. What are the attitudes towards such methods according to the managers, staff and elderly? Do their activities fulfill the goals made by the counsel of cultural affairs which would enable them to apply for financial support? The result of this case study shows a positive attitude from staff and managers towards cultural initiatives on Sannerudshemmet, but also a lack of awareness and professionalism in the matter of practicing it in their operation.
