Elever i den svenska grundskolan blir allt sämre på matematik enligt den senaste PISA undersökningen. Syftet med denna litteraturstudie är att besvara om användandet av laborativt material inom matematikundervisningen i grundskolan förbättrar elevernas matematikkunskaper och vad som påverkar användandet av laborativt material.

Denna kvalitativa litteraturstudie är baserad på nio tidigare studier. Den visar att användning av laborativt material i undervisningen bidrar till att öka grundskolelevers matematikkunskaper. Flera faktorer påverkar resultatet och hur materialet används, lärarens uppfattning om laborativt material, kombinationen av tydliga instruktioner till eleverna och ett bra anpassat laborativt material för respektive matematikproblem samt lärarens egen kompetens att använda sig av materialet i undervisningen.

Abstract [en]

Swedish students continue to score lower in mathematics compared to students from other countries, according to the latest PISA survey. The purpose with this study is to answer whether the use of manipulative material can help increase students' mathematical skills, and also find out which underlying factors are affecting this. This qualitative literature study is based on nine previous studies. The result shows that the use of manipulative helps to increase the students’ mathematical skills. Other factors plays a significant role in the degree of contribution and how the material is used, the teachers' opinion of manipulative material, the combination of clear instructions for the students and the best adapted manipulative for respective mathematic problem and the teachers skills to make use of the materials in their teaching.
