Trend analysis of chemical-physical parameters in Husumbukten (Baltic Sea) - assessment of the effects of a pulp and paper mill

The purpose of the report is to investigate if Husums pulp and paper mill has affected the nearby recipient water, Husumbukten. To accomplish this, data collected by the mill between 1990-2012 have been analyzed. The analyzed parameters include total phosphorus (Tot-P), total nitrogen (Tot-N), total organic carbon (TOC), sea salt (NaCl), oxygen content, chlorophyll, secchi depth and concentration of phytoplankton. Data was analyzed using standard software packages (Microsoft Excel). The recorded values show distinct seasonal variability. A slight increase in concentrations of Tot-P, Tot-N and oxygen was observed since the measurements started in 1990 (Tot-N 1996). The oxygen content for 2012 is classified as “Rich on oxygen” and the secchi depth is 4,5 meters which is classified as “Good” according to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA). When Tot-P and Tot-N values were compared against SEPA’s reference point Gaviksfjärden, no significant differences between the two water bodies were discovered. Considering trends in the time series data and comparisons to nearby unaffected reference sites, this study does not identify any clear environmental effect of the paper mill.
