Informal Learning in Language Teaching in Swedish Upper Secondary Schools : A quantitative study on language teachers’ use of and attitudes towards informal learning (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This essay studies upper secondary school language teachers’ use of and attitudes towards informal learning activities which are considered to promote improved student learning and motivation. Informal learning activities include narrative forms, technology-based learning aids for interaction with other target language speakers and inclusion of authentic material from the target language culture, social interaction and collaboration. Along with reviewing previous research on informal and formal learning, theories about motivation are also examined. The connection between informal learning and student learning and motivation is presented and constitutes the foundation of the essay. In order to collect quantitative data, a number of language teachers were asked to fill in a questionnaire of statements about the contents of their instruction. Results show that upper secondary school language teachers in general are inclined to use informal learning activities in their instruction to a great extent. The application of these informal learning activities appears to improve students’ learning along with increasing their motivation.
