Abstract [en]

This report contains seven analyses of texts and illustrations in instructional materials used in the teaching of basic skills to adult immigrants. The authors, representing several different research fields, discuss various aspects of three materials, chosen to serve as representative examples , e.g.: What i s the visual code that affects the choice of i llustrations and what implicit ideologies are revealed by these illustrations? What assumptions about the learner's knowledge and lack of knowledge underlie texts and illustrations? What different orders of presentation can be traced in different materials, as regards linguistic phenomena and the various skills to be acqui red?Which linguistic forms and functions are represented in thematerials and/or promoted when they are used?
