The purpose of this essay is to examine when teachers choose to discuss mathematics withstudents rather then just talk about mathematics. A definition where used to distinguish betweenan interaction that is not a discussion and an interaction that is a discussion. This definition hasbeen created by drawing ideas from other works into making a quite simple definition whichtherefore is easy to observe. The discussions are also separated into two different kinds ofdiscussions. The first and most common category of discussion are one where only imitativereasoning is used. The other type of discussion contains at least one sign of creative reasoning.The terminology imitative and creative reasoning comes from Lithners work A framework foranalysing creative and imitative mathematical reasoning. The data collected comes from observationsfrom three different schools. Five teachers where observed and a total of thirteen classes. Toregister the data and make the observations objective a observations chart where developedcontaining different categories of interaction. From the collected data diagrams where created inorder to show statistics of how often and when discussions containing imitative reasoning orcreative reasoning where used. Of all kinds of observed interaction teachers are using duringclasses discussions make up to about fifty percent. The rest is interaction which could not becategorized as discussions. The overall picture of the data show that creative discussions arerarely used and that teachers talk and discuss subjects that relates to the students personal studysituation.
