Abstract [sv]

This investigation is part of a larger project with the aim to create a

monitoring system for the traffic and traffic safety situation in urban

areas, on the municipal level, based on statistical information and with the

principal emphasis on vulnerable road users. Within the project, a special

questionnaire survey, with the focus on the municipal road and street

network, was conducted among the municipalities. The aim of the present

investigation has been to merge and utilise the available statistics and

information in describing and analysing the traffic and traffic safety

situation in municipalities. The results show that the risk of being killed

or seriously injured as a road user was least in the suburban municipalities,

followed by metropolitan areas and the group large towns. The risk of being

killed in the other municipalities was 3-4 times that in these three groups

of municipalities. The lower risk applied to both vulnerable road users and

motorists. The background factors for this difference in risk can be related

to differences in travel, differences in the traffic environment or the

infrastructure, and differences with regard to exposure in the traffic
