Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute.
2002 (Swedish)Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))Alternative title
New queue warning signs on the E6 through Gothenburg : results of some evaluation interviews (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

A before-after study was carried out to provide some data on the  effectiveness of new, computer controlled LED-equipped traffic signs, warning for congested traffic. Data  were collected through telephone interviews with drivers who had been observed driving in the  specially signed road section the morning of the same day when the interview was made. 203  interviews were made in the "before" period, and 224 in the "after" period, i.e. after the new sign  system had been installed.

Various methodological problems indicate the need for a certain caution in  interpretation, but the overall results indicate that most of the drivers in the "after" period  had seen the new signs and that most of them also interpreted the signs correctly. In spite of this  finding the reported behavioural effects are practically non-existent.

The interview included opportunities for spontaneous comments and several drivers pointed out that the message from, or function of, the new signs did not seem very reliable to them.

Some data, giving a more general overview of the morning traffic towards Gothenburg, are also presented.
