Abstract [en]

This master thesis encompasses an inventory and risk classification of four disused landfills within the municipality of Uppsala, Sweden. The model of the classification; ”Method of Surveying Contaminated Sites” is developed by the Environmental Protection Agency and can be used as a framework to investigate and describe the environmental damage and the level of risk for each object. The risk classification model has a rating from 1 to 4, where 1 represents a very high risk while 4 is a small risk. Risk class depends largely on the type of land use that exists on the object, and hence, various benchmarks must be taken into account. Land use controls the activities that may occur and thus the groups that may be exposed and to what extent it can be done. A piece of land is said to be polluted if the detected contamination level exceeds the background value. However, no risk class in itself means a heavily polluted area. The risk classification should more be seen as a tool to develop priority areas for further work. The landfills in this inventory are all located in close contact with the Uppsala esker, and are situated in a water protection area, placing them at a high priority level. Contamination dispersion depends largely on the surroundings and soil conditions. Hence, it has been deemed important to shed light on the geological and hydrogeological settings for the Uppsala area. During the investigation, weight has been placed on the legal aspects under the environmental code in terms of responsibility of finishing old landfills. The report, together with the inventory and risk classification is aimed to be helpful to the municipality when it comes to declaring burden and thus serve as a basis for continuing work on the cases. Of the surveyed landfills contained in this report, three of the four are placed in class 3, which means relatively simple remediation. One landfill has been placed in class 2nd.
