The Swedish Computing Engineer : A Comparative Study of 10 Swedish M.Sc. in Engineering Programmes in Computer Science (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In Sweden, ten higher education institutions offer att at least one M.Sc. in Engineering degree programme in the field of Computer Science. The names of the programmes differ almost as much as their content, and it is easy to wonder: What, actually, is a Computing Engineer? This thesis attempts to answer that question by surveying one degree programme per university or university college. This is done through a study of the programme's content of disciplinary knowledge and skills, as well as of general engineering skills, capabilities and attitudes (its non-disciplinary content). The disciplinary content of the programmes is charted and compared using the ACM/IEEE-CS Computer Science Curriculum 2008. The corresponding role for the non-disciplinary content is played by the degree learning outcomes for the M.Sc. in Engineering degree, as specified in the Swedish Higher Education Ordinance. Certain connections are also made to the CDIO Initiative and its Syllabus. In conclusion, the development of the degree programmes during the period 2006–2011 is also studied, particularly in relation to the 2006 National Quality Review of Swedish engineering programmes and the 2007 higher education reform, as is the programmes' current work in educational development. Conclusions are drawn regarding: patterns in the programmes' content; the relation between governing documents and reality; and the effects – or lack thereof – of various forms of governmental control.
