Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
The aim of this study was to determine situations where the Swedish trotter experience psychical stress and which stress-related problems that occur from these situations. The aim was also to give understanding to how people around the trotter could manage the stress and problems that occur from it. Two methods were used. A questionnaire study of 49 Swedish professional trainers and 18 Evidensia clinics for horses and a literature study. One interview with a veterinarian was performed by phone. Because of answering frequency to the questionnaires this study has no statistic significant results. The results show some indications on the Swedish trotters psychical stress load. In general the Swedish trotter is exposed to the same stressors as other race horses and horses in the equestrian sports. Situations involving stressors are transport and factors within the management of the horse, such as turning out, social contact and available forage. There are a number of diseases that exposure to stress can trigger, such as EGUS, overtraining, learned helplessness, stereotypes and the lowering of the immune system due to the release of cortisol and activation of the sympathetic nervous system. The conclusion of this study is that there are several situations that are potential stressors for the Swedish trotter, although it seems that the mental health is relatively good. Trainers seem to be well aware of the ethology of the horse and the importance of individual management for the psychological health of the horse.
