The benefit of playing: - how to integrate women and children in public space through play and everyday activities

Abstract [en]

Women and children are missing in the public spaces of Dharavi today. The public spaces are used differently by men and women. While men are using the public space freely, women only enter the public when they have reasons for it. It could be for shopping, making errands or picking and leaving their children at school.  

In the surroundings of the Default Site, there are six schools which all lack proper and safe playgrounds for the children to play in. By linking a space for the everyday activities of the women with a space for children to play in, in connection with the schools, I hope to give them reasons for leaving home and becoming natural actors in the society in which they live in. The space encourages meetings and interaction, which hopefully will lead to new acquaintances and a stronger community, and also develop the relation between the mothers and their children.
