A special parenthood : Lived experiences of being parent to a child with autism spectrum disorder (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study was conducted through a phenomenological perspective and aimed to investigate parents' experiences of having children with autism spectrum disorders, which include autism and Asperger's syndrome. This term, in turn, is a part of the medical term neuropsychiatric disorders. We wanted to understand how the parents perceived their situation and how they ascribed meaning to it.Three mothers with sons who have autism spectrum disorder were interviewed. The results were analysed by the method Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis. In order to explain the parents’ ascribing of meaning and understand their life-worlds we have used phenomenological theories. Further, research on medicalization has provided a context for interpretation in our analysis.4The study revealed that parents felt distrusted and that they constantly had to fight for their children. The fight was helped somewhat when the children were given a diagnosis that generated an explanation to the problem and pointed towards a possible solution. Despite the diagnosis, the environment still did not understand what the problems involved and the parents felt affinity to people with similar experiences.
