Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Breast cancer is one of the most common diseases among women in Sweden. Every day, 15-20 women are newly diagnosed. The aim of the study was to describe women´s experiences of living with and being treated for breast cancer. A literature study has been conducted and autobiographies have been analysed using a qualitative approach. The analysis resulted in five categories which represents common experiences that emerged among the women. These themes termed; A changed life, A bodily change, A spiritual change, Meetings with healthcare and An uncertain future. The women experienced that their life changed drastically when they received the cancer diagnosis. The women emphasised the importance of having a good relationship with the healthcare professionals as they were seen to be a great support during the time of the illness. The physical/tactile touch is an important part. It is the duty of the healthcare professionals to establish a good relation where the nurse-patient relationship is in focus. During the illness the women changed both physically and mentally but also spiritually and they experienced that their life was not the same as before the diagnosis. It can be seen as an important part of the nurses roll to establish a good relationship with the patient. It emerged that many of the women experienced loneliness after the treatment and missed the close contact with the healthcareprofessionals.
