1973 (Swedish)Report (Other academic)
Abstract [sv]

Klara skillnader erhölls mellan delpopulationerna rörande innebörden i begreppet 'same'.

Abstract [en]

Within the project "Education -for Lapps" an investigation was made in 1971 in the form of personal interviews with 200 Lapps from every Lapp village in Sweden. The purpose of the project was to find out the wishes of the Lapps themselves concerning education and alternatives to the School for Nomads. This report presents a definition of the population, sampling and comparisons between Lapps who are engaged in reindeer husbandry and Lapps who are not concerning the extent to which they identify themselves as Lapps. The sub-population engaged in reindeer husbandry was marked off from the reindeer owning people's registers for every village. The subpopulation not engaged in reindeer husbandry was limited to Lapps who have left reindeer breeding during the past 20 years. The size of the random sample was determined by the size of the village and was made up of 100 pyople from each subpopulation. Great difficulties arose in the selection among those who had left the Lapp villages since this subpopulation to a large extent was unidentified. These difficulties were solved through two-stage sampling. The investigation was concerned with if, and to what extent the two subpopulations differed as to Lapp identity on one hand and the meaning of this concept on the other. Of those engaged in reindeer husbandry 100% considered themselves as Lapps, for those who had left the villages the corresponding number was 89%. Obvious differences were obtained between the subpopulations concerning the meaning of the concept 'Lapp'. Most of those engaged in reindeer husbandry connected rights of various kinds with this concept, those who had left the villages stressed more often aspects showing an emotional attachement to the culture and home environnent. The analysis of the results showed that an extended definition of the concept Lapp was also anchored amongthose engaged in reindeer husbandry.
